It occurred to me that the pantones were the problem in that sketch. I kept trying to tune them and they kept avoiding me. Now... this doesn't happen often. Most of the time I do pantones and then color layer on them, if it turns out I want to do colors. It's just the way I digitally paint unless I'm doing comic coloring, which is an entirely different process.
But here I was with the lineart sketch, trying to set in pantone shading and it just wasn't working for me. So I ditched the pantones and went on instinct. After that it went a lot smoother--just throwing colors down and smooshing them all in there. Linework is still giving me fits in it, but it's not too terrible. I have to keep remembering this is a sketch and not meant to be a finished work.
Anyhow, here it is. The finished character sketch in color.
