So here I was, taking a break from a pro project to try for an Art Nouveau sort of Sherlock/John bookmark, since I am having to save up for a laminator to do the porny one because no print shops will take a lamination order on it. (Despite there being no actual tabA/slotB action in the bookmark art.
And I said to myself, hows about an almost kiss. Then the almost kiss became Sherlock being surprised by John's assertive come on. Not upset, but certainly surprised. And after hours of playing with the bookmark design, I decided it was a total flub. Not worth anything at all.
Then I thought, 'Wait, someone asked about my process the other day.' So I created this "stages of bookmark creation" image so you all can peek at the process of painting a bookmark. Of course, this is a Fail!Bookmark. But you get the idea.
Stage 1 is a rough sketch created to get an idea of what I want. It's mostly about placement and movement. Stage 2 is the lineart. THis stage is hard because often the characters don't look like themselves yet because lineart is flat and really isn't suited to capturing people well always. The third stage is with pantones built in. Pantones are grayscale values to set the chanels for the colors later. It's a pretty picky stage, but it's where a character really starts to look like themselves. ANd finally, colored, with background in place. And in this case formally ruined. LOL!
I may go in later and rework colors, since the pantone layer is seperate and safe. But then again, I'm rather sick of this one. Painting/drawing Martin with a smile is a stone bitch.
